Anichebe inspires Everton late show

With seven minutes left he turned Berti Glauber and earned a penalty as the defender hauled him back. Mikel Arteta kept his cool from the spot and Anichebe sealed the points with two minutes to go.

Early action
The visitors almost took the lead in the opening 20 seconds when Arteta tried his luck from the edge of the area. Jaromír Blažek got down to save but had to be alert to deny Tim Cahill, whose follow-up the Czech goalkeeper diverted on to his right-hand post. Nürnberg were stunned by the early assault and gave Leon Osman the space to race on to Arteta's through-ball minutes later. Osman's cross only needed a touch from Cahill but the Australian international arrived just too late.

Reinhardt influence
After surviving the early onslaught the hosts began to find their feet and would probably have taken the lead had Ivan Saenko's first touch matched his anticipation of Joleon Lescott's defensive lapse. Thereafter, the home side grew stronger, the influential Dominik Reinhardt teeing up Peer Kluge on the edge of the area only for the midfielder to fire wide.

Dramatic finale
On the half-hour Reinhardt himself came close, capitalising on a mistake by Steven Pienaar to draw a full-length save from Tim Howard. After the break Arteta almost fooled Blažek with a low shot, but in the main Hans Meyer's side looked in control until Anichebe entered the fray. Fifteen minutes later, it was all very different.
