Jol reign ended by Tottenham

Jol was in the dugout at White Hart Lane for his side's opening UEFA Group G match but, after reports began to emerge of his imminent departure during the 2-1 defeat, the club moved to settle matters. "We can confirm that the board has this evening asked Martin Jol, club manager, and Chris Hughton, first team coach to stand down from their positions with immediate effect," read a statement on the club's website. "We have not taken these decisions lightly or without recognition of the contribution both Martin and Chris have made to the club."

Promising start
The Dutchman first joined as assistant manager under Jacques Santini in June 2004, but was promoted to replace the Frenchman following his resignation four months later. He was rewarded with a new three-year deal after guiding his side to fifth place in the Premiership in his first season in charge and supporters were given every cause for optimism when his side repeated the feat in 2006/07, earning a return to the UEFA Cup having reached the quarter-finals.

However, the current campaign has been comparatively disastrous with just one victory from ten Premier League matches. Following Monday’s 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United FC the club remained third from bottom in the table and, after weeks of speculation surrounding his future, the club have finally taken action. Development coach Clive Allen and youth team manager Alex Inglethorpe have taken temporary charge.

"I can understand the position of the club in light of the results," said Jol. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Tottenham Hotspur is a special club and I want to thank the terrific staff and players. For me the fans were always amazing with their support so I would also like to say thank you – I shall never forget them."
