Midfielder Riccardo Montolivo has completed a perfect week by renewing his contract with ACF Fiorentina until 2012, one day after making his Italy debut in the 2-0 win against South Africa.
'At home'
The 22-year-old, whose deal had been due to expire in 2010, returned from the friendly international in Siena to commit his future to the Florence club. "I would have signed a longer contract if it was allowed by Italian rules," said Montolivo. "I'm extremely happy here, I feel at home. We are growing fast as a team and will soon be able to compete for honours."
Flying high
Still unbeaten in Serie A, the Coppa Italia and Europe this season, Fiorentina sit fourth in Italy's top flight after seven games. Montolivo has made five league appearances this term to take his total to 61 since he joined the Viola from Atalanta BC in 2005. Claudio Prandelli's team will be their country's sole UEFA Cup group stage contenders, having been drawn to face Villarreal CF, IF Elfsborg, AEK Athens FC and FK Mladá Boleslav in Group C. They begin away to Villarreal on 25 October.
