Atlético continue spree with Reyes

Arsenal FC and Spain forward José Antonio Reyes has been unveiled as Club Atlético de Madrid's latest big-money signing on a four-year contract today.

José Antonio Reyes has been unveiled as Club Atlético de Madrid's latest signing on a four-year contract after the Spanish side agreed a fee reported to be up to €12m with Arsenal FC. "I've wanted to play here since the club first showed an interest me when I was 13," he said. "It's a special day for me to be able to wear this shirt."

Summer spree
If those reports are accurate, the move takes Atlético's close-season spending up to €70m following their purchases of striker Diego Forlán, winger Simão, and midfielders Luis García, Cléber and Raúl García. Reyes almost moved to the Vicente Calderón last year but turned the switch down in favour of a loan move to city rivals Real Madrid CF, and as a result was forced to pay Atlético €2m in compensation.

Honours
The 23-year-old, who has won 21 Spanish caps, made 30 appearances for Madrid, mostly as a substitute, and scored six league goals – including two on the final day of the season against RCD Mallorca which secured a 3-1 victory and the Primera División title. Reyes joined Arsenal from Sevilla FC for a then club-record fee for the London club of around €25m in January 2004 and went on to win the Premier League in 2004 and FA Cup the following season. His final appearance for the Gunners was the 2006 UEFA Champions League final loss to FC Barcelona in Paris.
