Barry Opdam may be fit to play in AZ Alkmaar's UEFA Cup quarter-final against Werder Bremen after a knee injury proved to be less severe than initially suspected.

Barry Opdam may be fit to play in AZ Alkmaar's UEFA Cup tie against Werder Bremen after a knee injury proved to be less severe than initially suspected.

Medical examination
Coach Louis van Gaal feared the 31-year-old would face a long lay-off after limping out of AZ's 0-0 Eredivisie draw at Heracles Almelo on Sunday, but tests have revealed he has stretched rather than torn ligaments in his left knee. The club have not set a date for the eight-times Dutch international to return to action. They play Bremen on 5 and 12 April, starting the tie with the home leg.
