Fernandinho knocks out Nancy

Nancy-Lorraine 0-1 FC Shakhtar Donetsk (agg: 1-2) Fernandinho's second-half strike allowed the Ukrainian side to advance at hosts Nancy's expense.

Fernandinho's second-half strike earned FC Shakhtar Donetsk a 1-0 victory at AS Nancy-Lorraine and a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

Key moment
If the French side had claimed the advantage of an away goal during last week's 1-1 first-leg draw in Ukraine, the tie swung conclusively in favour of Shakhtar when Fernandino netted in the 70th minute at the Stade Marcel Picot.

Warning signs
Nancy had been served early notice of the threat to their European adventure when goalkeeper Damien Gregorini had to save from Ciprian Marica as he got a shot to Fernandinho's 12th-minute centre. Gregorini was also forced into action in a scramble following Matuzalem's corner, as Nancy struggled to get going.

Nancy go close
Eventually, Youssouf Hadji found space to flash an attempt just wide of a post, before Gaston Curbelo delivered a dangerous cross into Shakhtar territory which Vyacheslav Shevchuk did well to cut out. And although the first move of the second half required Nancy's Sébastien Puygrenier to intercept an Elano Blumer centre, the hosts gradually built up a head of steam as Puygrenier rifled over the crossbar and visiting keeper Bohdan Shust saved from Marc-Antoine Fortune.

Rare attack
Next to hint at a goal was Emmanuel Duchemin, whose 20-metre strike flew wide of the woodwork. Yet Nancy were left to rue their inability to find the target as Fernandinho scored in a rare Shakhtar attack. The Brazilian kept his cool to slot past Gregorini to heighten the hosts' frustration and secure his team a tie against Sevilla FC.
