Carvalhal departure
The 47-year-old had guided Naval to seventh place in the Liga with 15 points from nine matches, after keeping them in the top flight last season following his appointment with ten rounds to play. Gonçalves replaces Carlos Carvalhal following his departure on Wednesday.
Costa assists
He will be assisted by former FC Porto international defender Costa, who ended his player career last season after leaving R. Standard de Liège to find coaching experience. Braga, who stand in eighth place in the table on 14 points, face SL Benfica next weekend before travelling to Spain to tackle the holders Sevilla FC in the UEFA Cup.
