The UEFA Cup holders Sevilla FC built on two early own goals at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium to complete an emphatic 6-1 aggregate victory against Atromitos FC as further strikes from Luis Fabiano and Kepa Blanco carried them through to the group stage in style.
False prophecy
Their hard-fought 2-1 first-leg success in Greece had led some to predict a tricky night for Sevilla, especially with Frédéric Kanouté and Javi Navarro out injured. It proved a false prophecy, however, as within ten minutes Juande Ramos's side were already 2-0 up courtesy of own goals from Vasilios Apostolopoulos (3) and Dimitrios Ioannoy (9). Luis Fabiano then extended the lead before the half-hour mark to leave the home side cruising.
Darío Silva tribute
It was a torrid start for Atromitos who, with Konstantinos Andriolas, Georgios Korakakis, Ioannis Lazanas and Francis Doe all ruled out, looked a shadow of the side that pushed Sevilla so hard in the first leg. With the stands covered with banners conveying support for former player Darío Silva following his horrific car crash in Montevideo earlier this week, the Spanish side cruised into the group stages as Kepa completed victory with three minutes remaining.
