AZ acquire Gudjónsson

AZ Alkmaar have announced the signing of Iceland midfielder Joey Gudjónsson, who will join on a four-year contract in the summer.

AZ Alkmaar have announced the signing of Icelandic international midfielder Joey Gudjónsson, who will join the Dutch UEFA Cup contenders on a four-year contract in the summer.

Much-travelled career
The 25-year-old has already played in the Netherlands, with MVV Maastricht and RKC Waalwijk. He left ÍA Akranes in his homeland to join Belgian First Division side KRC Genk during the 1998/99 season, before spending a year with Maastricht, then moving to Waalwijk in the summer of 2000. A year later, Gudjónsson moved to Primera División outfit Real Betis Balompié and then went to England, and Aston Villa FC, on a six-month loan in January 2003. He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers FC that summer, and switched to his current club Leicester City FC the following year.

Steinsson extension
Meanwhile, another Icelandic international Grétar Steinsson has signed an improved and extended contract with AZ. The 24-year-old defender joined the Dutch club in September from Swiss side BSC Young Boys, and has subsequently played 13 matches in which he has scored three times, enough to get earn an three-year extension which will keep him at the club until 2011.
