Monaco go for Guidolin

Former US Città di Palermo coach Francesco Guidolin has been named as the new man in charge of French UEFA Cup contenders AS Monaco FC.

Successful caretaker
The French Ligue 1 side have been without a coach since the departure last month of Didier Deschamps, although they have won three games and drawn one under his temporary replacement Jean Petit. Monaco president Michel Pastor has now appointed Guidolin as Deschamps' permanent successor on a contract until the end of the 2006/07 season.

Man in demand
The 50-year-old Italian has been in demand since leading Palermo to promotion in 2003/04 and then a sixth-place finish in Serie A last term. The former Bologna FC and Udinese Calcio trainer was unveiled as coach of Genoa 1893 in the summer, but left hours later when the club were relegated to Serie C1 for match-fixing.
