The 32-year-old suffered the injury in the opening Eredivisie match of the season against NAC Breda on 14 August and has not played for coach Erwin Koeman since. Feyenoord club doctor Robbart van Linschoten said: "All other therapies have failed to work, which is why we have decided after intense deliberation to opt for surgery." Feyenoord travel to AFC Rapid Bucuresti on Thursday for the second leg of their UEFA Cup first-round tie, after a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands.
