Turkish teams suffer setbacks

It was a miserable night for Turkish sides as Besiktas JK and Galatasaray SK both conceded 1-0 first-leg deficits in the UEFA Cup first round, while FC Basel 1893 will take an emphatic 5-0 lead into the second leg of their tie against NK Široki Brijeg on 29 September.

Besiktas JK 0-1 Malmö FF
Brazilian striker Afonso Alves scored a superb 70th-minute goal as Swedish outfit Malmö fashioned a surprise victory in Istanbul. Orchestrated by the resourceful Kleberson, Besiktas dominated proceedings but contrived to squander countless opportunities, with Tümer Metin and Ibrahim Üzülmez particularly guilty. Alves made them pay for their profligacy late on.

Tromsø IL 1-0 Galatasaray SK
Former UEFA Cup winners Galatasaray also suffered a narrow defeat in Norway. Hungarian defender Tamás Szekeres struck the only goal of the game midway through the second half, but the home side were equally indebted to goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld who kept the team in the reckoning with a string of stunning saves, while like Besiktas, Galatasaray were guilty of wasting numerous chances.

Vitória FC 1-1 UC Sampdoria
Sampdoria had goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli to thank for keeping the 1990 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners on level terms in Portugal. The Genoese outfit began well and took the lead through Francesco Flachi on 13 minutes. But Setúbal immediately took the initiative, and Oumar Tchomogo eventually equalised just after the restart with a blistering drive before Antonioli came to the fore, making a string of saves to leave the tie finely poised.

US Città di Palermo 2-1 Anorthosis Famagusta FC
First-half goals from veteran midfielder Eugenio Corini and Franco Brienza gave UEFA Cup debutants Palermo a narrow advantage to take to Cyprus in a fortnight. Corini marked his side's competition bow in some style, rifling in a sixth minute free-kick, and the Sicilian side looked to be coasting when Brienza converted a penalty. But fresh from their impressive UEFA Champions League run, Anorthosis fought back and Timur Ketsbaia reduced the deficit late on.

Bolton Wanderers FC 2-1 PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1936
Jared Borgetti chose an opportune moment to break his goalscoring duck for Bolton, scoring a last-gasp winner to complete an impressive comeback on the Premiership side's European debut. The Bulgarian visitors took the lead through Boban Jancevski midway through the first half, but El Hadji Diouf headed in Nicky Hunt's cross to draw level with just 18 minutes remaining before Borgetti struck to seal a home win.

FK Teplice 1-1 RCD Espanyol
Iván de la Peña came off the substitute's bench to help Espanyol salvage a share of the spoils in a hard-fought encounter in the Czech Republic. The Spanish side looked set for defeat as they went into the final ten minutes still trailing to Tomáš Jirsák's strike. But De la Peña, dropped after a disagreement with coach Miguel Ángel Lotina, came on and his searching ball found Luis García for an 81st-minute equaliser.

Viking FK 1-0 SK Austria Vienna
Norwegian side Viking will take a slender lead into the second leg of their UEFA Cup first round tie against Austria after second-half substitute Robert Mumba struck the only goal of the game on 72 minutes. The midfielder swept home Peter Kopteff's right-wing cross to edge a finely-balanced encounter, meaning Viking will take a one-goal advantage back to Norway in two weeks.

FC Basel 1893 5-0 NK Široki Brijeg
The most comprehensive win of the night came in Switzerland where Matías Delgado scored a hat-trick as Basel swept aside ten-man Široki Brijeg to put one foot firmly in the group stage. Delgado broke the deadlock on ten minutes but the Bosnia-Herzegovnian side remained in the game until Stipe Rezic's 53th-minute dismissal. Ivan Ergic, Delgado and Eduardo then made it 4-0 before Delgado completed his haul, and Basel's win, on 88 minutes.

Brøndby IF 2-0 FC Zürich
Basel's Swiss rivals Zürich fared less well in Denmark as goals from Morten Skoubo and Dan Anton Johansen gave the home side a healthy first-leg lead. A lively presence in a cagey first-half, Skoubo broke the deadlock just before the interval, heading in Asbjørn Sennels cross. Brøndby came out for the second half a different side, and eventually sealed victory on 74 minutes when defender Johansen fired home an unstoppable long-range drive.

Grasshopper-Club 1-1 Myllykosen Pallo-47
Grasshoppers completed the set for Swiss sides, adding a draw to Basel's win and city rivals Zürich's loss. They got off to the best possible start when Brazilian striker Rogerio broke the deadlock inside 60 seconds but a 22nd-minute strike from another Brazilian, Marco Manso, restored parity to leave the tie even for the second leg in Finland.

APOEL FC 0-1 Hertha BSC Berlin
Marcelinho converted a penalty deep into added time as Bundesliga outfit Hertha earned a last-gasp win in Nicosia. The Brazilian midfielder fired home after Yildiray Bastürk had been brought down to give the visitors a scarcely deserved win after a lacklustre performance. Indeed, APOEL had a number of chances to forge ahead but Stavros Georgiou, Konstantinos Makrides and Marios Neophytou were all denied by the excellent Christian Fiedler.
