Saviola appeared as a 65th-minute substitute in the 1-1 draw at El Madrigal, but suffered a sprain to the lateral external ligament of his left knee as well as bruising after colliding with Villarreal's debutant goalkeeper Mario Sebastian Viera.

Sevilla medical chief Juan de Dios Beas confirmed the injury after tests on Monday. Saviola will likely be sidelined for between three and four weeks, meaning he will sit out Thursday's UEFA Cup first round first leg at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05 and almost certainly the return in Germany on 29 September.
