Free transfer
The 26-year-old, recently signed on a free transfer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, broke his left ankle in a challenge with Siena defender Daniele Portanova.
Immediate surgery
Medics took Bierofka to a nearby hospital where the diagnosis was confirmed and the former German international immediately underwent surgery. It is not yet known how long Bierofka will be out for, but club officials expect him to be sidelined for several months.
Injury hoodoo
It is Bierofka's second major injury in under a year. He missed much of last season after having an operation on a persistent back problem, making just 16 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen.
