Alkmaar were keen to retain the services of the 34-year-old, as technical manager Martin van Geel admitted: "We are extremely satisfied about Barry van Galen staying - he is fit enough to play one more year at the top level. He is of huge value to this team."
Cup success
The former Haarlem FC, Roda JC and NAC Breda player is in his eighth season at Alkmaar, for whom he has scored 50 goals in 215 league appearances. On 24 February he had a crucial role in helping his side reach the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, scoring the equaliser and setting up the winning goal in the 2-1 victory against TSV Alemannia Aachen.
