Composed displays
The 18-year-old right-back, who captained the club to their first-ever FA Youth Cup victory last season, made his senior debut at Old Trafford against Manchester United FC last October and has since impressed with composed displays in the Premiership and UEFA Cup. He recently won a call-up to England's Under-19 side.
New contracts
Owing to a succession of injury problems, Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren has been forced to introduce a number of young players to his squad, and has been busy tying some of them to new deals in recent weeks. Among those who have agreed contracts are England U17 international centre-back David Wheater, whose deal will run for the next three and a half years, and fellow defender Matthew Bates, who has signed up until summer 2009.
