Curro Torres awaits surgery

Valencia CF full-back Curro Torres will be out for up to six weeks after having a knee operation.

Cartilage damage
The 28-year-old right-back has been suffering pain in his right knee since sustaining cartilage damage during the UEFA Champions League defeat by Werder Bremen on 29 September. Tests this morning persuaded club medical staff that an operation was needed and the player will have the surgery in Barcelona tomorrow.

Race to be fit
As a result, Curro Torres faces a race to be fit for Valencia's opening tie in the UEFA Cup, where they face FC Steaua Bucuresti in the last 32 on 16 and 24 February. Valencia, the UEFA Cup holders, return to that tournament after dropping out of the Champions League and they will definitely be without winger Vicente Rodríguez against Steaua as he had an ankle operation on 3 January.
