The 23-year-old Schmitz arrived at the Grimonprez-Jooris stadium in 2001 from Malutrom, a Brazilian second division side. After three mixed seasons, he has enjoyed a good first half to the current campaign, making eleven appearances in the league and three in the UEFA Cup.

With their last Group H game against Sevilla FC approaching on Thursday, Lille are already through to the last 32 of the competition and they have also impressed in Ligue 1, where they are in second place, three points behind leaders Olympique Lyonnais.
