Left knee
The Portuguese international striker hurt his left knee in a challenge with Vitória FC goalkeeper Marco Tábuas in the 22nd minute of a match Benfica won 4-0 yesterday. It is the second time the 28-year-old has been sidelined with knee problems since UEFA EURO 2004™ as, in the immediate aftermath of that tournament, he had trouble with his right knee.
No surgery
His absence will not just hurt Benfica but his country as well as he is almost certainly ruled out of the FIFA World Cup qualifier away to Luxembourg next week. A statement from Benfica's medical staff said: "The sprain in his left knee is confirmed, but there is no need for surgery and we'll conduct medical treatment appropriate to this kind of injury."
