Replaces Heynckes
The 46-year-old replaces Jupp Heynckes who was sacked two weeks ago on the eve of Schalke's UEFA Cup first-round tie against FHK Liepajas Metalurgs. The German side won that fixture 5-1 at the Arena AufSchalke, meaning Rangnick can afford to relax for his first game in charge, the return in Latvia on Thursday.
Hannover job
The new man will be assisted by Eddy Achterberg, the assistant coach who had assumed caretaker duties following Heynckes' departure. Rangnick said: "Schalke are a club with huge potential and I am really looking forward to helping the players perform at their limit. I want the team to enjoy themselves and play attacking football. That is what I want to see and that is what the fans want to see."
Experienced campaigner
Rangnick began his coaching career with SSV Ulm 1846, moving on to VfB Stuttgart and Hannover 96. He guided Hannover from the lower leagues to the Bundesliga but was sacked in March and had been without a club since.
