Robson dismissed
Newcastle have been seeking a replacement for Sir Bobby Robson, who was dismissed last week. Souness, 51, had been at Blackburn since March 2000 and guided the club back into the Premiership in 2001 before leading them to victory in the English League Cup in 2002.
First match
Souness's appointment will become official next Monday, after Newcastle's match at home against Blackburn on Saturday. His new team, who have collected just two points from four games this season, face Israeli side Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin FC in the UEFA Cup first round the following Thursday.
Management CV
The former Scottish international started out in management with Rangers FC in 1986 before being appointed by his former club Liverpool FC in 1991. He worked subsequently at Galatasaray SK, Southampton FC, Torino Calcio and SL Benfica. As a player, Souness won the European Champion Clubs' Cup three times with Liverpool.
