New faces light up UEFA Cup

There will be a Spanish side in the UEFA Cup final - and a new name on the trophy.

Marseille face Newcastle
Inter were beaten by Olympique de Marseille, for whom Camel Meriem scored the only goal of the second leg at the San Siro to complete a 2-0 aggregate success and earn a semi-final against Newcastle United FC. Sir Bobby Robson's side beat PSV 2-1 on the night - and 3-2 on aggregate - through goals from Alan Shearer and Gary Speed.

All-Spanish semi-final
The other semi-final will be a local affair between Mediterranean neighbours Villarreal CF and Valencia CF - meaning there will be a Spanish side in the final. Villarreal, in their debut season in European competition having advanced from the UEFA Intertoto Cup, were 3-1 aggregate winners against last season's runners-up, Celtic FC, after a 2-0 victory at El Madrigal.

Debut campaign
Sonny Anderson and Roger García scored the goals. Valencia, meanwhile, repeated their 2-1 first-leg victory at home to FC Girondins de Bordeaux through strikes from Mauricio Pellegrino and Peter Rufete.
