Celtic challenge awaits Barcelona

Celtic FC were paired with FC Barcelona in the draw for the fourth round of the UEFA Cup.

Past masters
The 16 winners of last night's third-round matches were divided into two groups of eight, with four teams seeded in each. Seven former winners of the European Champion Clubs' Cup were among those to progress, including Celtic, the first British victors in 1967, and Barcelona, Europe's finest in 1992.

Scant reward
A Spanish side will also meet a British one in another tie after RCD Mallorca were pitted against Newcastle United FC, while Valencia CF, twice UEFA Champions League runners-up in recent years, will play Gençlerbirligi SK. The Turkish challengers will be hopeful of another major scalp after eliminating the 1999 winners Parma AC 4-0 on aggregate last night.

Intriguing tie
Another intriguing fixture brings together SL Benfica, European champions in 1961 and 1962, and FC Internazionale, the club who prevented them from winning a third crown in the 1965 final at the San Siro. Liverpool, four times the champions of Europe and UEFA Cup winners on three occasions, most recently in 2001, will face Olympique de Marseille.

Impressive performance
The only team remaining from the UEFA Intertoto Cup, Villarreal CF, ousted Galatasaray SK in style last night and will hope for an equally impressive performance when they play AS Roma at home in the first leg of their fourth-round tie. Belgium's sole representative in European competition, Club Brugge KV, take on FC Girondins de Bordeaux of France, while AJ Auxerre and PSV Eindhoven will also square up.

Gothenburg showpiece
The scheduled dates for the fourth-round matches are 11 and 25 March, although matches could still be reversed. The winners of each of the eight ties will know which opponent they will meet in the quarter-finals and semi-finals after those draws were also made today. The final will be played in Gothenburg on 19 May.
