Danes reward resolute Wieghorst

Brøndby IF midfield player Morten Wieghorst has been named Denmark's Player of the Year for 2003.

Brøndby IF midfield player Morten Wieghorst has capped his remarkable career revival by being named Denmark's Player of the Year for 2003 after topping a poll of Danish Superleague players and internationals.

Courageous battle
The 32-year-old's playing days seemed behind him when he was hospitalised with the rare brain disease Guillaume Barre syndrome three years ago. But the former Celtic FC player battled back to regain his fitness and reclaim a place in the national side, for whom he has won 29 caps, thanks to consistently solid performances in the Brøndby engine room.

Laudrup thanked
"I would like to thank the colleagues who voted for me," said Wieghorst after beating Thomas Gravesen and Jon Dahl Tomasson to the coveted title. "I'd also like to thank Brøndby, and in particular our coaching team, Michael Laudrup and John Jensen, for giving me the chance - as well as my team-mates, family and all my friends in Scotland."
