Midfield player David Albelda has signed a new contract which will keep him at Valencia CF until 2010.
Six-year extension
The 26-year-old Spanish international's current contract with the UEFA Cup contenders was due to expire in June 2004, which would have allowed him to leave on a free transfer. Instead he has opted to sign a six-year extension, a move that means he may well end his playing days at the Mestalla.
Local product
Albelda, born in the Valencian region of Pobla Llarga, has held down a regular place in the Valencia side since making his debut against Club Atlético de Madrid on 22 November 1997. He has also made 12 appearances for Spain since his international debut in September 2001.
Youngster signed
Meanwhile, Valencia have signed promising midfielder David Galindo Gallego from fellow UEFA Cup hopefuls Villarreal CF on a three-year contract. The 20-year-old, who will join Valencia's B team, played in the UEFA Intertoto Cup for Villarreal last season and has represented Spain at Under-18 level.
UEFA Cup challenge
Valencia currently lie in second place in the Primera División, two points behind leaders Real Madrid CF, and face Turkish side Besiktas JK in the third round of the UEFA Cup.
