Hanke spares Schalke's blushes

A solitary goal by FC Schalke 04's teenaged substitute Mike Hanke was all that separated the German side and NK Kamen Ingrad in their UEFA Cup first-round tie.

Late header
Hanke came off the bench to score a 77th-minute header and book Schalke's place in the second round after a tense game had seemed destined to finish goalless just like the first leg in Croatia three weeks ago.

Slow start
The 52,600-strong crowd were almost stunned on the six-minute mark when Aleksandar Kopunovic's shot ended up just wide and the visitors went close again midway through the first half. Defending in numbers at the back, Kamen Ingrad burst forward on the counter and won a free-kick, from which Zoran Zekic watched his 15-metre header strike the crossbar.

Galinovic heroics
At the other end, Anibal Matellán headed straight at goalkeeper Mario Galinovic and Filip Trojan shot the wrong side of the far post as Schalke began to turn the screw. Galinovic was on hand once more just before half-time to deny Victor Agali from 12 metres.

Decisive goal
Schalke seemed more determined after the break and were only denied an opener when Galinovic produced a fine double save to keep out shots from Tomasz Hajto and Agali. But as extra-time approached with neither side having found the net in almost three hours of football, 19-year-old Hanke - who had only been on the field for 12 minutes - nodded in a Darío Rodríguez cross to score the decisive goal.
