Former winners
The draw will be held at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, with four former UEFA Cup winners among those hoping to go all the way to the final in Gothenburg on 19 May 2004. Feyenoord and FC Schalke 04 booked their place last night, while Liverpool FC and Parma AC made sure of progression from the first round on Wednesday night.
Big names
Liverpool and Feyenoord are also two of the seven sides involved that have been previously crowned champions of Europe along with BV Borussia Dortmund, FK Crvena Zvezda, FC Steaua Bucuresti, SL Benfica and FC Barcelona. Other names to look for include Newcastle United FC, Valencia CF, Sporting Clube de Portugal and Rosenborg BK.
Draw procedure
For the draw, UEFA will divide the teams into four groups of 12 teams based on geographical criteria and in accordance with the club coefficient rankings. Two pots will be prepared for each group, one with six seeded teams and the other with six unseeded sides. A team will be drawn from each pot, placed in an empty bowl and shuffled.
November matches
The first team drawn will play their first match at home, against the second team drawn, subject to any later reversals. The procedure will then be repeated for each of the four groups. The fixed date of the first-leg matches is 6 November, with the returns to follow on 27 November.
