Blazevic back in Croatia

Former national coach Miroslav Blazevic has returned to Croatia to accept the coach's job at NK Varteks.

Besek departure
The 68-year-old, who led his country to third place at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, recently resigned from his post at Slovenian club NK Mura. Meanwhile, Varteks dispensed with the services of their coach Drazen Besek after a 3-1 home defeat by Hungarian side Debreceni VSC in a UEFA Cup first round first-leg tie.

Great expectations
"I am happy to accept a new job but I know there are great expectations on me," Blazevic said. "I won't promise a championship this season but that will be our main goal next season."

'Miracles can happen'
Varteks chairman Davor Darabos added: "We are expecting Blazevic to get us a place in Europe next season and even to win a trophy in Croatia this season. Also, we are still not out of the UEFA Cup - miracles can happen." Varteks travel to Hungary for the second leg of their UEFA Cup tie on 15 October.
