Bellamy leads Newcastle goal spree

Round-up 1: Newcastle United FC were the biggest first-leg winners on a hectic night.

Bellamy double
Craig Bellamy had not scored for Newcastle since March, but in a six-minute period after the half-hour he scored twice, first chipping in after an Alan Shearer flick-on, then converting Laurent Robert's cross. Titus Bramble claimed his first Newcastle goal on 58 minutes, heading in a Robert corner, Shearer shot in from long-range 16 minutes later and substitute Darren Ambrose opened his account for the club late on.

Late City winner
Across England, fair play entrants Manchester City FC also took a first-leg lead but their 3-2 victory against Belgium's KSC Lokeren OV was far less comfortable. Antoine Sibierski's early free-kick for City was quickly cancelled out by Patrick Zoundi and Runar Kristinsson then put the visitors ahead five minutes before half-time. Lokeren held on until 13 minutes from the end when Robbie Fowler claimed his first goal of the season and almost immediately Sun Jihai was tripped in the box and Nicolas Anelka converted the penalty.

Dinamo delight
FC Dinamo Bucuresti could be progressing past the first round of a European competition for the only time in 12 years, as they twice struck late to beat FC Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0. Shakhtar's Darijo Srna and Dinamo's Dorin Semeghin had both been sent off for second bookable offences when Claudiu Niculescu put the home side into an 85th-minute lead, and Ianis Zicu then doubled the advantage.

Mallorca success in Cyprus
Spanish Cup holders RCD Mallorca gained a hard-earned
2-1 victory in Cyprus against APOEL FC. Antonio González Rodríguez put the visitors ahead on 20 minutes but George Papandreon equalised just before the break - only for Arnold Bruggink to score the winner ten minutes after half-time.

Benfica draw
SL Benfica had Simão Sabrosa's 52nd-minute goal to thank for a 1-1 draw in Belgium against RAA Louviéroise after Peter Odemwingie had given the home side an early lead. Their Portuguese rivals UD Leiria won 1-0 at home to Norway's Molde FK with Brazilian player Caíco on target early in the second half.

Norwegian victories
Two Norwegian sides claiming victory were champions Rosenborg BK, who won 4-1 at Latvian side FK Ventspils, and relegation-threatened SFK Lyn, Helgi Sigurdsson scoring the only goal for a 1-0 away win against FC PAOK in Greece. PAOK's local rivals FC Aris Thessaloniki fared better with a 1-1 draw in Moldova against CSF Zimbru Chisinau.

Debrecen triumph
Hungarian side Debreceni VSC won 3-1 in Croatia against ten-man NK Varteks while their compatriots Ferencvárosi TC came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to FC København. HNK Hajduk Split kept the Croatian flag flying by holding on for a 1-1 draw at Swiss team Grasshopper-Club despite being reduced to ten men.

Utrecht and Hearts take leads
Dutch Eredivisie club FC Utrecht did not suffer the same fate as league rivals NAC as they beat Slovakian champions MŠK Žilina 2-0, while Scotland's Heart of Midlothian FC overcame Bosnia-Herzegovnian Cup holders NK Željeznicar by the same score.
