Mihalitsios steps in at Aris

Greek UEFA Cup challengers Aris Thessaloniki FC have appointed Giorgos Mihalitsios as their new coach.

Youth work
The former Aris player has spent several seasons coaching the club's youth team but has now stepped up to the top job following the resignation last week of Giorgos Firos.

'A difficult spell'
"I know Aris are going through a difficult spell and I am realistic about the task ahead," he said. "But above all I am a fan of Aris and I could not turn my back when I was offered the job. I will do everything in my power to help the team."

Dramatic resignation
Firos resigned in dramatic style ahead of the new campaign, complaining that the club's parlous financial situation had made it impossible for him to do his job.

'Tolerance point'
"As a man, I cannot take it any longer," said Firos in his resignation letter. "I am way past my tolerance point. Unfortunately, nothing is being done to keep Aris out of the administrative and financial dead-end the club are facing."

Unpaid wages
Supporters and former players stepped in with donations so that the club could get a professional licence for the coming season, but the squad were told shortly afterwards that the club could not afford their wages. Many had not been paid for several months already.
