Frustrated Firos leaves Aris

FC Aris Thessaloniki are looking for a new coach after Giorgos Firos handed in his resignation.

Fans supportive
Firos's departure is the latest of several setbacks the UEFA Cup contenders have suffered in recent months. "As a man, I cannot take it any longer," said Firos in his resignation letter. "I am way past my tolerance point. Unfortunately nothing is done to keep Aris out of the administrative and financial dead-end the club are facing. Only the fans, who contributed with their donations have been sensitive to the club's problems."

Licence problem
One of Aris's major difficulties has been obtaining a licence for the forthcoming Greek season, which required them to get their financial situation in order. Because of a lack of funds, supporters and former players stepped in with donations and the club were able to secure the licence a week ago.

Wage worry
However, the players were told yesterday that the club could not afford their wages, although many had already not been paid for several months. A club statement said: "The players have been informed to the fullest about the situation, the problems and the prospects of Aris. Although Aris were granted the licence, for the time being we cannot meet our debts to the players, who are to be congratulated for their decent behaviour.

'Dramatic phase'
"We acknowledge that the players are providing their services in the most unfavourable circumstances. We know that many of them face an acute financial problem. But the club is going through a dramatic phase. We may have the fans on our side, but we have to battle on many different fronts."

Third spell
Firos had returned to take charge of the club for a third time in July 2002. He was an Aris player for 12 years between 1971 and 1983 and was coach previously from 1992-95 and 1997-98.
