German Cup runners-up 1. FC Kaiserslautern have handed a one-year contract extension to goalkeeper Tim Wiese.
Fine debut
Wiese, 21, will now be tied to the Bundesliga club until the end of June 2005. He joined the club in the 2001/02 winter break from third division SC Fortuna Köln and made his debut on the opening day of last season against VfB Stuttgart, earning the man of the match award in a 1-1 draw.
UEFA Cup place
By the midway point of the season he had displaced the experienced Georg Koch as coach Eric Gerets's first-choice goalkeeper, and helped Kaiserslautern avoid relegation and reach the German Cup final, where they lost 3-1 to champions FC Bayern München but earned a place in the UEFA Cup. He has also become an automatic choice in the Germany Under-21 side.
