A penalty from Julio Dely Valdes was enough to secure Málaga
CF's place in the second round of the UEFA Cup at the expense of FK Zeljeznicar.
Bright opening
Neither team had been able to break the deadlock in Sarajevo a fortnight ago, and it always seemed likely that a set-piece would decide matters. The hosts began brightly at La Rosaleda and scored after just seven minutes.
No mistake
The penalty came about when Koke was brought down by Edis Mulalic in the penalty area. The responsibility of taking the kick fell to Panama striker Dely Valdes, and he made no mistake for the team that came through to the UEFA Cup from the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
Powerful shot
Dely Valdes nearly extended Málaga's lead nine minutes later but his powerful shot was straight at the feet of Zeljeznicar keeper Kennan Hasagic. Dely Valdes then turned provider with a fine cross for the in-form Kiki Musampa, whose effort shaved the post.
Karic off
The visitors offered little going forward and any hope they had of getting back into the game ended when Denis Karic was sent off for a poorly timed tackle eleven minutes from the end. Málaga, cheered on by the Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, were content to sit on their lead with the visitors unable to find a way through with just ten men.
