Újpest no match for PSG

Paris Saint-Germain FC 3-0 Újpesti TE First-half goals see Újpest flounder in Paris.

Paris Saint-Germain FC 3-0 Újpesti TE
Three goals in the first half were enough to see Paris Saint-Germain FC take a decisive advantage in the first leg of their UEFA Cup first-round tie against Hungarian side Újpesti TE.

Ronaldinho strikes
The game was all but finished by half-time as the home side dominated proceedings at the Parc des Princes. PSG opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Cristobal Parralo's cross from the right found Brazilian international Ronaldinho, who headed past visiting goalkeeper Géza Vlaszak from five metres.

Far-post header
Újpest barely had time to recover from that early blow before they found themselves another goal behind. Paulo César had just seen a free-kick tipped round the post for a 24th-minute corner, before stepping up to deliver a right-footed inswinger which eluded the visiting defence for Mauricio Pochettino to head past the despairing Vlaszak at the far post.

One-touch football
While the visitors continued to demonstrate their mastery of one-touch football and produced some fine approach play, they did not have the guile to unsettle a determined PSG defence, and found themselves 3-0 down at half-time.

Cardetti makes it three
Vlaszak was partially to blame as Fabrice Fiorese directed a cross from the left-back across goal which the goalkeeper misjudged, allowing Argentinian striker Martin Cardetti to drive the ball from close range into an unguarded net.

Fine save
Ronaldinho nearly added to his side's tally in the second half, but his long-range free-kick was palmed over the crossbar as Vlaszak made amends for his earlier error. The nearest the visitors came to a goal was when Dejan Poljakovic broke down the right after 73 minutes but, with only Lionel Letizi in the PSG goal to beat, he miscued his shot hopelessly wide.
