FC Zimbru Chisinau 3-1 IFK Göteborg
A first-half scoring spree from Viorel Frunza and Levan Gvazava inspired Moldovan side FC Zimbru Chisinau to a 3-1 win against IFK Göteborg for one of the most eye-catching results from the first-leg matches in the UEFA Cup qualifying round.
Göteborg fall behind
Göteborg, two-time winners of the competition, were surprised from the start by the home team, who raced into a two-goal lead in the opening 25 minutes. First, Gvazava crossed for Frunza to head past Bengt Andersson from close range in the 20th minute and then provider turned scorer soon after as Gvazava ran at the Swedish defence before firing past Andersson from 20 metres.
Attempted comeback
The Swedish visitors looked like making Zimbru work hard for their victory when Sebastian Henriksson pounced to punish a defensive error in the 35th minute, but within a minute, the Moldovans had restored their two-goal advantage. Frunza's 35-metre effort looked like an easy catch for Andersson, but somehow the Göteborg goalkeeper saw the ball slip between his hands to give Zimbru what proved a decisive lead.
Zimbru hold on
Göteborg were the more attack-minded side after the interval but were unable to break their hosts down and Zimbru will be confident of progress going in to the second leg in two weeks' time.
