Cúper's happy returns
Inter were 1-0 winners at Valencia CF in the Mestalla stadium, where Héctor Cúper celebrated the return to his old stomping ground by ending Valencia's 34-match unbeaten record in European ties there.

Tel-Aviv look to make history
Milan, meanwhile, overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 2-0 defeat of Hapoel Tel-Aviv. If both teams are drawn at home in the same leg, Milan's tie will be reversed as Inter finished last season the higher-placed of the two in Serie A.

Penalty shootout
In Thursday night's other ties, Feyenoord progressed against PSV Eindhoven via a penalty shootout after a second 1-1 draw, while BV Borussia Dortmund were comfortable 4-0 winners against FC Slovan Liberec.
