Paulo Miranda was the hero for FC Girondins de Bordeaux as they beat Roda JC 1-0 in their UEFA Cup third round first-leg tie.
Dugarry missing
The 27-year-old Brazilian headed home a Laurent Battles cross in the 49th minute to give the French club a narrow victory. Bordeaux had gone into the match without the services of Christophe Dugarry, after the French international was injured in a friendly against Australia earlier this month.
Chances missed
Roda, who have not enjoyed the best of seasons so far in the Dutch Eredivisie, had to defend for much of the game as Bordeaux spurned a number of chances in front of goal. By keeping the deficit down to just one they will fancy their chances at home, although they will know they cannot afford to concede an away goal.
Confidence boosted
Bordeaux were well aware of the importance of not conceding. "We would have liked to score more goals but at least we did not concede any," said defender David Sommeil. "We lost 3-2 at home against Troyes last week and we needed to boost our confidence. That's what we did."
