Slovan slide into contention

Slovakian side ŠK Slovan Bratislava made it into UEFA Cup without incident with a 1-0 win over Cwmbran Town FC that was almost a formality after their 4-0 away victory in the first leg.

Solitary goal
Striker Lubomir Meszaros scored the only goal of the game with a close-range effort ten minutes from time. The Welsh defence claimed the strike was offside, but Lithuanian referee Paulius Malzinskas allowed the goal to stand.

No sweat
The Slovakians, who finished runners up in their domestic league last season, barely broke a sweat at the Slovan stadium.

Possession
The hosts, who had already done the hard work, enjoyed the majority of possession but lacked the incisiveness that characterised the defeat of their semi-professional rivals in the first match.

Spurned chances
A clutch of chances before the break were all spurned. Yugoslavian defender Dragan Mojic went wide from a good position and Meszaros missed two presentable chances early on.

Resolute defence
Slovan's hopes of another demolition job were also curtailed by some resolute Cwmbran defending, something which they could have used a fortnight ago.

Cwmbran unlucky
Cwmbran had a few opportunities of their own after the break when striker Nathan Cotterall and Lee Brown were both unlucky.
