Northern Ireland will look to ward off another embarrassing result against the Faroe Islands as the sides come together for the fifth time in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group F.
Match background
• Northern Ireland's record in four games against the Faroe Islands is W2 D2 L0 (W1 D1 L0 at home, W1 D1 L0 away).
• They first met on 1 May 1991 at Windsor Park, Colin Clarke (45) putting the home side in front only for Kári Reynheim (65) to reply and earn Páll Gudlaugsson's side a 1-1 draw. It was only the Faroes' third competitive match. Billy Bingham's side won the return leg – in Landskrona, Sweden – 5-0, goals from Kevin Wilson (8) and Alan McDonald (14) complementing a Colin Clarke hat-trick (12, 51 and 68).
• The sides were rematched in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying. On 12 October 2010, Brian Kerr's Faroes held Nigel Worthington's Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in Toftir, Kyle Lafferty (76) replying to a strike from Christian Holst (60). Northern Ireland made amends in Belfast, winning 4-0, Aaron Hughes (5), Steven Davis (66), and Pat McCourt (71 and 88) the scorers.
• In UEFA age-group competitions, Northern Ireland's record in five games against the Faroe Islands is W4 D1 L0 – with no goals conceded. The nations' Under-19 sides will meet for the first time on 14 October 2014.
• The four meetings between the nations' clubs in UEFA competitions have left the Northern Irish sides with the record W2 D2 L0 – and again, no goals conceded. Linfield FC were taken to penalties by B36 Tórshavn in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, but the Belfast side won 4-3, and then beat ÍF Fuglafjørdur 5-0 on aggregate in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League first qualifying round.
