The Respect Your Health – Euroschools 2012 initiative continues to have a positive impact ahead of UEFA EURO 2012 in Poland and Ukraine this summer – with Polish children helping to spread the message at a special tournament.
The "Gramy z sercem" (Playing with Heart) tournament in Trzcianka, near Poznan, was a four-day event for football fans, featuring children aged seven and eight. There was also a charity aspect to proceedings, with support given to young Dominik, who suffers from scoliosis.
A specially organised drawing competition about fair play had preceded the event, and the results were exhibited throughout the four days. A health quiz with true or false questions took place and those achieving the best results were awarded Respect Your Health T-shirts.
The tournament proved a resounding success: "I never thought health could be this fun. The quizzes were cool," said Janek, a young participant in "Gramy z sercem".
The Respect Your Health – Euroschools 2012 initiative promotes healthy living among children and their families, with a focus on smoking prevention, good diet, moderation in alcohol consumption, and encouraging physical activity.
Coordinated by UEFA partner streetfootballworld, as well as the Volunteers for Sport Foundation in Poland, the Respect Your Health programme trains schools, NGOs and local coaches to combine sport sessions with health education activities. As part of Respect Your Health, UEFA EURO 2012 has been declared a smoke-free event.
