Belgium have it all to do against Germany

Beaten 1-0 by Germany in their opening UEFA EURO 2012 Group A game, Belgium hardly have history on their side as they seek to avoid further punishment away to Joachim Löw's team.

• Miroslav Klose's 51st-minute goal was enough for Germany to begin their qualifying campaign with a win in Brussels.

• Germany and West Germany's combined record in 24 games against Belgium reads W19 D1 L4 (W9 D1 L1 at home, with that sole defeat coming in the sides' first meeting over a century ago, a 3-0 victory for the visitors on 16 May 1910). East Germany's record against Belgium was W3 D2 L3 (W1 D2 L1 at home).

• Belgium's only success on German soil since 1910 was a 2-1 win against East Germany in a UEFA European Championship qualifier on 30 March 1983, Franky Van Der Elst and Erwin Vandenbergh scoring the goals.

• Belgium have lost all seven of their contests with their hosts since German reunification. In total, they are on a run of eight defeats by their opponents since a 0-0 friendly draw in Munich on 22 September 1982.

• You have to go back fully 16 matches for the last time Belgium prevailed in a fixture against Germany or West Germany – a 2-0 friendly win over West Germany in Brussels on 26 September 1954.

• The subsequent 15-game sequence includes the final of the 1980 UEFA European Championship, which West Germany won 2-1 in Rome thanks to a Horst Hrubesch double, his second effort coming in the final minutes after René Vandereycken had levelled from the penalty spot.

• Oddly, Belgium had the better of the early encounters between the two nations, winning their first three friendly games against Germany in 1910, 1911 and 1913. Their 1954 triumph in Brussels remains their only victory since then, however.
