Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard has been ruled out for the rest of the season, meaning he is likely to miss England's UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier against Switzerland on 4 June.

The 30-year-old midfielder has not played since 6 March after undergoing surgery on a groin problem, and having returned to training suffered a setback last week. Although Liverpool have not identified the precise nature of Gerrard's injury, manager Kenny Dalglish is resigned to being without the skipper for the remainder of the campaign as the sixth-placed Premier League team aim to earn a European place.

"We still don't know definitively what the problem is, so we will wait until we get a precise answer from the people he has been to see, but he will not be involved again this season, so that's Steven as well for this season," said Dalglish, already without Daniel Agger with a knee injury but hopeful that England right-back Glen Johnson can overcome a hamstring problem.

Halfway through their UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group G programme, unbeaten England are ahead of Montenegro on goal difference, with Switzerland – visitors to Wembley on 4 June – and Bulgaria both six points adrift.
