Spain, Netherlands and Germany keep on winning

Spain, Germany and the Netherlands maintained their 100% winning starts to UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying on a night that also showcased Montenegro's aspirations.

Spain, defending world and European champions, denied a battling Scotland side with a 3-2 win at Hampden Park in Group I, substitute Fernando Llorente striking a 79th-minute winner after the hosts had fought back from two down. While Spain have a maximum nine points, the Netherlands side they beat in the FIFA World Cup final made it four wins out of four in Group E by beating Sweden 4-1 as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice more to take his qualifying tally to eight.

Germany have four wins from four at the Group A summit after a 3-0 success in Kazakhstan which, combined with Turkey's shock 1-0 defeat at Berti Vogts' Azerbaijan, put them five points clear. The Group A drama did not end there as Martin Harnik's added-time equaliser earned second-placed Austria a 4-4 draw in Belgium in the night's highest-scoring game.

Montenegro maintained their superb start in Group G with a goalless draw in England – their fourth successive clean sheet enough to keep them three points clear of Fabio Capello's side in first place. Elsewhere, Greece beat Israel 2-1 to move top of Group F, Group D leaders France earned a third straight win against Luxembourg and Paulo Bento had his second victory as Portugal's new coach away to Iceland.

Finally, the night produced two goalkeeping heroes with the Faroe Islands' 40-year-old custodian Jákup Mikkelsen frustrating Northern Ireland as his team earned their first Group C point in Toftir. Russia's Igor Akinfeev, meanwhile, saved a penalty from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's Ilco Naumoski to secure a 1-0 win in Skopje – the Group B leaders' second away victory in five days achieved thanks to another Aleksandr Kerzakhov goal.
