After Italy's 3-0 loss to the Netherlands, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon apologised to the Azzurri supporters for his side's disappointing performance. He vowed to make it up to them and was as good as his word, producing what might turn out to be the save of the tournament to keep out Adrian Mutu's late penalty in the 1-1 draw with Romania. Buffon is in good company at UEFA EURO 2008™, where Europe's top goalkeepers have been turning on the style. euro2008.com takes its pick of the best saves so far.

Volkan Demirel, Portugal 2-0 Turkey
Diving full-stretch to his left, the Turkey goalkeeper just got enough on Cristiano Ronaldo's vicious free-kick to touch it on to the post.

Stipe Pletikosa, Austria 0-1 Croatia
The Croatia goalkeeper won the Carslberg Man of the Match award for his performance, the pick of his saves coming at the death when he pushed aside Ümit Korkmaz's fierce drive to preserve his side's lead.

Artur Boruc, Germany 2-0 Poland
The Celtic FC goalkeeper turned a disbelieving Michael Ballack's powerful drive over his bar with a brilliant finger-tip save.

Gianluigi Buffon, Netherlands 3-0 Italy
Buffon saved superbly with his legs to keep out Ruud van Nistelrooy as he burst through on goal just before half-time.

Edwin van der Sar, Netherlands 3-0 Italy
The outcome might have been so different had Van der Sar not dived at full length to keep out Andrea Pirlo's curling free-kick shortly after blocking Fabio Grosso's shot with his legs.

Petr Čech, Czech Republic 1-3 Portugal
Čech's running duel with Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the the highlights of a terrific match. Ronaldo would have the last laugh but not before Čech had thwarted him a number of times, notably when flinging himself to his left to punch away the 23-year-old's thunderbolt shortly before the break.

Volkan Demirel, Switzerland 1-2 Turkey
Volkan Demirel's double save to deny Ricardo Cabanas and Gökhan Inler in the closing stages as four Swiss players bore down on goal allowed Turkey to go on and steal victory at the last.

Artur Boruc, Austria 1-1 Poland
Only Boruc stood up to the Austrian onslaught in the opening 20 minutes, saving brilliantly from Martin Harnik in particular as he burst clear.

Bogdan Lobonţ, Italy 1-1 Romania
A string of fine stops kept Italy at bay. His diving save to keep out Daniele De Rossi's late header was the pick of the bunch.

Gianluigi Buffon, Italy 1-1 Romania
Buffon had actually dived too far to his left and needed to raise a hand to block Mutu's powerful penalty. He was fortunate as the ball cannoned down on to his foot and away to safety but he had surely earned his luck.
