No side has successfully defended the UEFA European Championship title and 2008 is no exception after holders Greece fell at the first hurdle on Saturday night.

Their 1-0 loss against Russia ended their challenge at the group stage and left coach Otto Rehhagel ruminating on the "miracle" of 2004 when the rank outsiders triumphed against the odds in Lisbon. Greece's fairy-tale run to the continental crown four years ago was cited as a source of inspiration for a number of coaches coming into the tournament, with Croatia's Slaven Bilić and Romania's Victor Piţurcă among those taking heart from their win.
