Marco van Basten's spectacular effort for the Netherlands against the USSR in the final of the 1988 UEFA European Championship won the vote for the best volley of all the previous tournaments by a considerable margin.
The Dutch striker's volley polled 55 per cent of the votes from euro2008.com users, with Ronnie Whelan's goal for the Republic of Ireland, also against the Soviet Union in the same tournament, in second spot with 38 per cent of the overall total. Marc Overmars' volley for the Netherlands against Yugoslavia at UEFA EURO 2000™ was back in third place with seven per cent.
For the next Carlsberg Goal of the Day poll, euro2008.com will cast its eye over three brilliant individual goals. Go to the Carlsberg Goal of the Day section on euro2008.com, log in, view the videos and vote. We have expert analysis of each of the goals below from team-mates of the goalscorers:
Dutch international Giovanni van Bronckhorst analyses Johan Cruyff's solo effort for the Netherlands against Belgium in the 1976 UEFA European Championship quarter-finals:
"This is a beautiful goal technically. He is sent away by a pass at exactly the right speed, but I think that most players would give a pass from this position, or try to shoot powerfully towards the near post. But because of Cruyff's unique vision he decides to curl the ball into the far corner. I think only a very few players would be able to succeed in doing it this way; this is the exceptional quality of the player."
The Czech Republic provide the second goal as Vladimír Šmicer describes a wonderful lob from Karel Poborský against Portugal at EURO '96™ which proved to be the only goal of their quarter-final meeting:
"It was an exceptional goal. Such a perfect execution can be seen only a few times in your life. The idea itself was as perfect as the realisation. This one was a winner as well. One would expect such a shot in a match where the outcome was already decided, not when the score was 0-0."
Denmark legend Peter Schmeichel gives his opinion on our third goal, scored by Kim Vilfort in the EURO '92 final defeat of Germany:
"Out of absolutely nowhere Kim gets the ball and, I have to say about Kim Vilfort, I had a pretty good idea at the time that this was going to be a goal because Kim scores the most impossible goals."
