David Villa was left "a bit angry" after missing out on a hat-trick in Spain's 2-0 win in Liechtenstein by hitting a penalty against the bar in added time.
Missed penalty
The Valencia CF forward eased any Spanish nerves in the first 14 minutes of the Group F game, scoring twice in a workmanlike victory for Luis Aragonés's side. "I've scored two goals but the fact I missed the penalty makes me a bit angry," he admitted. "The important thing is we won. Six months ago a black cloud was over us but now the skies are clear."
Second place
Spain's UEFA EURO 2008™ prospects looked in doubt when they lost away against Northern Ireland and Sweden in successive qualifiers in the autumn, but a run of four straight wins since then, including a 2-0 victory in Latvia on Saturday, has left them second in the section, level on 15 points with leaders Sweden. "I'm sure after this victory Spain will be at the finals," said debutant RCD Espanyol forward Luis García.
'More goals'
Coach Aragonés confirmed he would not seek to extend his contract beyond the final tournament, and admitted he would like to see his side score more. "We deserved to score lots more goals tonight but sometimes the ball just won't go in and there's nothing you can do about it," he said. "I'm happy with the two games we have played but I would have liked more goals."
