Tomasson fires Denmark to victory

Jon Dahl Tomasson scored twice as Denmark secured a comfortable victory over Liechtenstein in their UEFA EURO 2008™ Group F game in Vaduz.

Danes second
Daniel Jensen and Michael Gravgaard also netted during the first half as the Danes bounced back from their disappointing draw against Northern Ireland. The win moved Denmark to within five points of leaders Sweden in second place, with Liechtenstein pointless after three matches.

Deadlock broken
With Denmark welcoming back winger Dennis Rommedahl, while goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen replaced the injured Thomas Sørensen, the away side started the brighter and Thomas Kahlenberg squandered a glorious opportunity to put them ahead within a minute, firing wide from ten metres. Tomasson then forced two good saves from Liechtenstein goalkeeper Peter Jehle as the visitors continued to pour forward. They eventually took the lead in the 29th minute when the lively Rommedahl's cross was slotted in from 12 metres by Daniel Jensen.

Doubling up
Liechtenstein might have levelled immediately when Benjamin Fischer headed over, and the hosts were punished for their profligacy as Denmark doubled their advantage on 32 minutes. Niclas Jensen whipped in a dangerous centre and Gravgaard rose highest to nod past Jehle. Martin Jørgensen then forced Jehle to save on the stroke of half-time as Morten Olsen's men chased a third goal. They finally claimed this when Lars Jacobsen's cross was drilled in by Tomasson in the 51st minute.

Tomasson tally
The VfB Stuttgart striker grabbed his second nine minutes later by heading Jorgensen's cross past Jehle to take his international tally to 43 goals. Centre-half Daniel Agger nearly made it five when he fired wide following Claus Jensen's free-kick, before Liechtenstein's Mario Frick blasted over at the other end. Tomasson then wasted the chance of a hat-trick before Gravgaard nodded wide in the dying seconds. Denmark, who have yet to concede a goal in three matches, travel to Spain for their next engagement on 24 March while Liechtenstein host a resurgent Northern Ireland on the same day.
