Wilhelmsson keeps Sweden winning

Sweden consolidated their position at the top of UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group F as goals early in each half, from Kim Källström and Christian Wilhelmsson, secured a fourth successive win and overturned Iceland's initial advantage.

The visitors were in buoyant mood as Saturday's victory against Spain had given them a five-point lead in the standings, although Lars Lagerbäck was deprived of Fredrik Ljungberg, Anders Svensson, Tobias Linderoth and Olof Mellberg for the trip to Reykjavik. Swedish optimism was punctured in the sixth minute when Iceland, beaten 4-0 in Latvia at the weekend, went ahead through Arnar Vidarsson's long-range half-volley that found the top corner.

The advantage lasted only two minutes, however, with Sweden levelling through Källström whose stunning 40-metre free-kick curled beyond Árni Arason in the Iceland goal. Clear chances proved harder to come by as the half unfolded, although Hannes Sigurdsson might have restored Iceland's lead before the interval had he connected properly with Grétar Steinsson's cross. At the other end, another Källström set-piece was headed off the line by Hermann Hreidarsson and Sweden stepped up the pressure as the second half began, Johan Elmander's drive forcing Arason into action again.

The goalkeeper was beaten for the second time a minute before the hour, Erik Edman and Marcus Allbäck combining to create the opportunity for Wilhelmsson smash a shot past the Iceland No1 and into the net. The home team battled for a way back into the match, Sigurdsson pushing a shot just wide before Eidur Gudjohnsen was denied by the crossbar. Elmander and Källström both spurned chances to make the game safe, yet Sweden had done enough and will look to continue their perfect start away to Northern Ireland on 28 March. Iceland, meanwhile, have three points from four fixtures and visit Spain the same night.
