Austria will relish the chance to take on a different kind of opponent when Ghana arrive in Graz on Saturday for a high-profile friendly against the UEFA EURO 2008™ co-hosts.
Unbeaten run
Josef Hickersberger's men have been on a good run and are unbeaten in four matches as they play a series of non-competitive internationals in the run-up to next year's finals. However, examining the results in closer detail, a 1-1 draw in Malta last month and 2-1 victory against Liechtenstein in October, raise some concerns about the strength of the side, though in between there were 2-1 and 4-1 successes against Switzerland and Trinidad & Tobago.
Offensive style
Veteran midfielder Markus Weissenberger believes the Ghana game will give Austria an opportunity to show their real potential, which they could then take into next Wednesday's glamour friendly against France at the Stade de France. "Teams like Liechtenstein and Malta play defensive football, while Ghana and France prefer to attack," said the Eintracht Frankfurt man. "It's going to be easier for us to play our offensive game."
Staying positive
Hopes of free-flowing football may be hindered, though, by the severe weather in Austria. Heavy rain and sleet have left many pitches in poor condition, and Hickersberger's squad have had to train on artificial turf. With snow predicted for later in the week, it has not led to ideal preparation, although the coach is staying focused. "Whining doesn't help," he said. "We have to make the best of it. This is our motto for the EURO as well - making the most of our opportunities."
Key absentees
To that end, Austria will seek to capitalise on the fact Ghana are without powerhouse midfielders Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah, not that Hickersberger is taking them lightly. "They are missing two strong players, but I wouldn't say Ghana are lacking the heart of their team. Those that replace them will be quality players as well, Ghana have very good alternatives." Likewise France will be deprived of Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry next week, yet if they too possess strength-in-depth, Austria at least know they have a chance of preserving their unbeaten run.
